This study was a descriptive correlational study. The subjects were 197
nursing students studying at A college in Kyeong-buk. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaire from September 3, 2007 to October 9, 2007. This study was performed by a trained study nurse. The instruments used here were MBTI questionnaires for personality types, Cohen¡¯s study instruments for stress in practice and coping style. The data were analyzed by frequency analysis, the independent t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson¡¯s correlation using SAS program.
The results of this study were as follows:
¤ý The distribution of the personality types of nursing students according to preference was as follows; E(Extraversion)- 51.8%, S(Sensing)- 82.2%, T(Thinking)- 62.4% and P(Perception)- 53.8% respectively. The ST type was dominant by 49.2% in the distribution of functional type and the SP type for temperamental type occupied as much as 42.6%. Of all the personality types, the ISTJ type received the highest percentage of 17.3%. ¤ý The overall stress in practice did not show statistical difference according to preference, functional type or temperament type. Yet, there were remarkable statistical differences in the items of stess in practice. ¤ý There were no significant differences both in the problem-focused coping style and in emotion-focused coping style by preference. ¤ý There were statistically meaningful differences in the problem-focused coping style by functional types. The NF group utilized more problem-focused coping style than the ST, SF, NT groups. Yet, the emotion-focused coping style by function didn¡¯t reveal statistical difference. ¤ý There were statistically significant differences in the problem-focused coping style by temperamental types. The NF group used more problem-focused coping style than the SJ, NT, SP group.
